The number of commuters at Swiss train stations has increased dramatically over the last few years. Correspondingly, on-the-go consumption at train stations has increased in tandem. The Swiss FMCG market may have remained stable in the recent past but the share of stomach has definitely changed. The newest Nielsen Shopper Trend Study shows that every second person purchases at least one item at a train station convenience store every 4 weeks.
On-the-go consumption experienced a spectacular growth rate of +4% from 2015 to 2016 and of +8% from 2016 to 2017. The expenditure on convenience products such as sandwiches and salads shot up by +24% from 2016 to 2017. Furthermore, there is no single product group that saw a decrease in on-the-go consumption.
