October 30 , 2007- New York, NY – Jericho Monster (jerichomonster.blogspot.com) is the winner of Hey! Nielsen’s “Top TV Blog” contest, The Nielsen Company announced today. Hey! Nielsen, the company’s new social networking website for entertainment enthusiasts, conducted the contest among its members from Date to Date. Altogether members of the Hey! Nielsen community (heyNielsen.com) voted for over 80 blogs that focus on television in the US and Canada. The top five blogs, are as follows:
#1. Jericho Monster (jerichomonster.blogspot.com)
#2. Cultural Learnings (memles.wordpress.com)
#3. Televisionary (televisionary.blogspot.com)
#4. TV Squad Blog (tvsquad.com)
#5. TV Over Easy (tvovereasy.com)
“Blogs are the epicenter of online passion, and these TV blogs are taking passion to an entirely new level,” explained Pete Blackshaw, EVP of Nielsen Online Strategic Services and a member of the HeyNielsen.com team. “The common thread across the winners is deep, in-depth, spirited—and sometimes controversial—rants and raves about shows, including those which got cancelled.”
Every month HeyNielsen.com will invite users to rate blogs and key online sites in various entertainment categories. These rankings will help set the context for the broader set of rankings and analytics from the site. Nielsen plans on launching a Music Blog Contest in November.
Using data from real users, Hey! Nielsen generates a Hey! Nielsen score—a real-time indicator of a topic's impact, influence, and value. As users submit feedback, the score is created from a number of factors, such as user response, blog buzz, and news coverage, as well as raw data from our sister sites Billboard.com, HollywoodReporter.com and BlogPulse.com.
Jericho Rises to the Top
Rising to the top of the score was the popular TV blog Jericho Monster, a site which to date has generated hundreds of comments, reviews and rankings on HeyNielsen.com. “What’s unique about the Jericho show is that fans have mobilized around the show in an extraordinarily extreme manner and this in turn has revealed unique opportunities to the networks in the “user engagement” arena,” added Blackshaw.
But that’s still not enough for the leader of this Jericho Monster, Jane Sweat. When informed of the site’s top ranking, she said: "I would like to see the networks become more involved with fans by sharing new, original content with bloggers and I'd like to see them use more fan created artwork and ideas."
Karen Watson, Senior Vice President of Communications at The Nielsen Company, and Executive Sponsor of Hey! Nielsen said, “Hey! Nielsen’s objective is to get feedback from the general public about entertainment, and one of the earliest adapters of the site are the TV bloggers. Blogs have become increasingly mainstream and important to public debate. Nielsen is paying attention and so are its clients."
