December 3 , 2007, San Francisco, CA- The Nielsen Company today announced that Mitch Barns has been named President of Nielsen Greater China. Barns will report directly to David Calhoun, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Nielsen Company, and will serve on Nielsen’s Executive Committee.
In his new role, Barns will oversee the company’s operations across China as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and will be responsible for leading a growing array of Nielsen capabilities and partnerships in the world’s largest market. In addition to expanding Nielsen’s established consumer business in China, he will lead efforts to fully develop and integrate the company’s Media services, and to introduce new Online and Mobile services to China’s fast-growing broadband and wireless markets.
“Mitch is a truly global executive, having led initiatives for Nielsen in Europe, Asia- Pacific and Latin America,” said Calhoun. “As a result, he brings both a broad perspective and a deep understanding of China’s role in the world economy, and will work closely with other senior leaders in the region to enhance Nielsen’s position in this promising market.”
Barns moves to Nielsen Greater China from his current position as Global President of the company’s Homescan, Spectra and Loyalty practices. Previously, he had been Global President of BASES and Analytic Consulting. He first joined Nielsen in 1997 as part of the client service organization with BASES, and led the globalization of the unit in Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Prior to Nielsen, Barns worked at Procter & Gamble, where he ran Advertising Research and New Product Forecasting operations.
