- Multi-Category Travel sector attracted an additional 550,000 unique audience
- Airline and Hotel Information entities grow during October
- News sites see positive results - 9 out of top 10 report increases
Sydney, Australia – 28 November 2016: As the Christmas season approaches, Australians looked to plan their holidays online during October, with increases in unique audiences to online travel entities, according to the latest data from Nielsen Digital Ratings (Monthly).
The Multi-Category Travel sub-category attracted an additional 550,000 people compared to the previous month, to reach a unique audience of 10.9 million. TripAdvisor leads with an 8% increase to reach 5.5 million. Virgin Travel and Webjet saw increases of 6% reaching unique audiences of 2.4 million and 1.8 million respectively, and Flight Centre had a healthy increase of nearly 17%.
The Airlines sub-category saw increases with Qantas growing by 13% to reach 3.8 million unique audience, Virgin Australia reaching 2.3 million (+6%) and Jetstar 2.2 million (+17%).
Hotel Information entities also saw significant uplift in unique audience numbers with Airbnb reaching 1.6 million (+34%), Hotels.com 1 million (+25%) and Stayz increasing by 21%.
Current Events & Global News
News sites saw positive results during October, with 9 of the top 10 sites ranked by unique audience reporting growth. News.com.au retained the top position in Nielsen’s digital rankings with a unique audience of 5.5 million.
ABC News lifted to second place with a sizeable unique audience increase of 15% to reach 4.6 million and Nine.com.au ranked third with a unique audience of 4.5 million, a 7% increase. Smh.com.au moved to fourth place with a unique audience of 4.2 million (+3%).
Daily Mail Australia and Yahoo7 news retained their 5th and 6th positions in the rankings with increases of 8% and 14% respectively. The Herald Sun jumped to 7th place overall with a 17% increase.
The Guardian moved to 8th place in the rankings during October and The Age to 9th. BBC moved back into the rankings in 10th place.
