With teams based in New York City, Tel-Aviv and Halifax Nova Scotia, our engineering team has grown by by 50% over the last 1.5 years to help the business execute on its strategy of solidifying its market position and developing new product lines to increase Market Share. The global engineering team is responsible for the development, deployment and maintenance of the tooling, data pipelines, data warehouses, machine learning and customer facing UI.  We are committed to a cloud migration with a clear target architecture which will be achieved through an evolutionary plan of updating existing systems to microservices using Docker, Kubernetes, and Kafka. 

 

The Role

 

Location: Cologne or NRW region, – Germany 
Remote working is possible, – as long as able to get to Cologne office on average 10 days/month. 

 

We are looking for a Manager Software Engineer in Cologne, Germany, responsible for managing a scrum team of 5-7 software engineers but will still cut code as part of the team. Engineering Systems and services developed in Germany cover and support a wide range of the Nielsen Sports portfolio, including a global TV recording system, social media scanning and content collection, image and brand recognition as well as data processing and providing interfaces to systems developed by other teams and for reporting to our clients.
Key technologies used include MySQL for data storage and task management, .Net web application front ends for data production and reporting, and a variety of background services for processing. Currently  we are building new components with .net core framework in c# and Angular for frontends in AWS.  Our belief is to always use the right tool for a job, why the responsibility is to constantly monitor and evaluate developments in technology with the team and the wider Nielsen engineering community, suggesting and selecting the best tools and technologies for the jobs at hand.

Responsibilities

 

  • Lead and own technology definition and development of Nielsen Sports products and components owned and developed by your team (consisting of 5 members)
  • Lead your team’s engineering practices to collaborate with other teams across multiple Nielsen locations to deliver product increments in the Nielsen Sports Product range.
  • Act as a key stakeholder to the product roadmap for the components you deliver, helping to devise solutions to high-priority business issues and ensuring technical improvements to the quality and stability of the components are fed into the roadmap. 
  • Lead recruitment of new engineering team members for growth and backfill roles 
  • Support team’s wellbeing and their personal and professional growth, helping them to have a positive and happy day to day working atmosphere
  • Ensure efficient development practices, code quality standards and culture of continous improvements and learning are set up and followed by the team
  • Ensure the team consistently and predictably delivers valuable releases to the production environment in a continuous deployment environment
  • Responsible for quality, security and reliability of components and development practices
  • Actively participate in development using the team’s preferred technology set. .net core, c#, Angular, container technology and appropriate AWS services
  • Develop technical capability of team members, promote DevOps culture
  • Support team’s wellbeing and their personal and professional growth, helping them to have a positive and happy day to day working atmosphere

You may not have had all of them, critically you should be able to share your experiences of development skills and craft, mentorship and some examples of leadership in projects or as a manager.

 

In order of preference/best match: 

 

  • Hands-on leadership of a software development team as a manager or as a lead in a project
  • Strong hands on development experience in C# and one or more other programming languages
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience in growing one or more engineers skill set through coaching and mentoring
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, and ideally fluency or strong command of German (spoken and written)
  • Strong data engineering experience including an understanding of databases, data pipelines and data warehousing.
  • You will have worked with multiple databases, both relational and NoSQL and will understand the pros and cons of each type which you can use to help direct your team and make technical decisions.
  • Able to build and sustain relationships within your team and within other technology, product and stakeholder teams. 
  • Experience of working in a team using one or more agile delivery methodologies and an understanding of the key principles of that methodology
  • Experience of developing and deploying .NET 5 applications to production environments
  • Experience in the full product life cycle of developing and deploying components to cloud (AWS) and data center environments
  • Experience in maintaining, supporting and upgrading software systems in production
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Strong data engineering experience including an understanding of databases, data pipelines and data warehousing.
  • You will have worked with multiple databases, both relational and NoSQL and will understand the pros and cons of each type which you can use to help direct your team and make technical decisions.
  • Strong hands on development experience in JavaScript using Angular or similar frameworks
  • Development experience over multiple products using web standards and protocols such as HTTP, DNS, TCP/IP, and socket APIs in general
  • Experience in software and architecture component design for scalability, performance and reliability.
