One in four Europeans under the age of 25 are unemployed, a record-high percentage that affects six million families. Those representing the future of Europe need help, and Nielsen has stepped up to assist them.
Last year, our company joined forces with Nestlé and a small group of other founding member organisations to create the Alliance for YOUth, a program committed to tackling youth unemployment in Europe.
The program has grown, and Nielsen is now one of around 200 Alliance supporters. Together with governments and non-profits, Alliance participants are assisting 20,000 Europeans under the age of 30 find employment opportunities and strengthen their professional skills over these next three years.
Nielsen has contributed to the Alliance in three key ways:
- We have taken the lead on developing a Readiness for Work toolkit (in collaboration with other Alliance partners), which is being rolled out to all organizations to support their university and school CV clinics and interview coaching. Pilot workshops have been very successful to date in engaging students and helping them to better understand how to apply for jobs and prepare for interviews and assessments.
- Nielsen has also been involved in the conception of the Alliance Facebook page, where we now advertise vacancies. We also act as an ongoing member of the editorial committee.
- Finally, Nielsen conducted two specially-commissioned pieces of research: the first, assessing opinions of young Europeans on unemployment in Europe; and the second, seeking employers’ views on apprenticeship and internship schemes. Both surveys have increased the Alliance’s understanding of the issues and helped advance its cause. They have also been used to underpin the Alliance’s recent broadcast debate into youth unemployment at the European Parliament this month.
At Nielsen, we have launched a new Advanced Apprenticeship programme in the U.K. We’ve also hired additional interns in Spain and Portugal, with more internships planned in other countries this summer.
