India’s retail universe today stands at over eight million stores – the largest in the world, contributing to the $35 billion FMCG market. In recent times, the modern trade phenomenon with its rapidly growing significance and widening assortment has been in the limelight; yet almost 94 percent of total FMCG sales and 90 percent of urban FMCG sales still take place in traditional outlets. With an eye on emerging demand, we look at the traditional trade marketplace to see where demand is growing the fastest and which channels provide the fastest growth in terms of consumer offtakes.
