Challenge is everywhere, and for many financial services firms, things have been off kilter since the start of the Great Recession. While the economy has bounced back to some degree over the last few years, however, Alok Gupta, a principal at the Cambridge Group, explains that pressures and hurdles aren’t abating for many banks and finance companies. Regulatory pressure, consumer skepticism, the lack of differentiation and scant innovation are all weighing on firms’ ability to interact, engage and connect with consumers. And according to Gupta, how banks proceed all comes down to how they answer one pointed question: Do they want to stay a utility or do they want to own the relationship and win the consumer’s loyalty?
