The Hispanic Home Ownership Gap

Hispanics will account for roughly 40% of all new household formations in the U.S. between now and 2020, but their prospects for home ownership are uncertain. The Hispanic home ownership rate, which peaked at nearly 50% in 2007, is now at 45% and declining. Most Hispanic movers say they plan to purchase in the next five years, but only 19% are actually prepared to do so in today’s environment. The resulting gap between those who want to purchase and those prepared to do so represents approximately 2.5 million Hispanic households.
