A ‘California’ State of Mind Takes Over the U.S. Album Charts

Up until the week ended July 7, 2016, Drake’s Views had held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 album chart for an incredible nine straight weeks. Then came the release of Blink-182’s California, which de-throned Views as if it was the year 2001. And the album’s success has spread beyond the U.S. In Canada, Blink-182 becomes the first non-Canadian act to top the Billboard Canadian albums consumption chart in more than two months. The new album from the alternative rock superstars debuted with 186,000 total equivalent album sales in the U.S. While the Southern California pop-punk outfit has been together since 1992, this is only the group’s second chart-topping album. It’s also the band’s first chart-topper since 2001’s Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. With 172,000 album units sold, it’s the band’s highest one-week sales total since its self-titled release in 2003.

The band, which experienced most of its mainstream success in the early 2000s, may credit its recent resurgence to a long-time fan base of alternative rock music fans with a penchant for nostalgia. According to Nielsen Music research, alternative rock fans tend to be old-school in their music consumption. In fact, alternative rock music fans spend slightly more time than the average listener with their physical music collection, including CDs and vinyl. According to Nielsen Music’s recent Audience Insights on alternative rock, fans of this genre are 60% more likely to listen to music on vinyl and 32% more likely to use an Apple iPod than other devices to listen to music. They’re also very loyal to alternative rock music and are less likely to listen to other musical genres. Alternative rock fans also spend more of their dollars on music concerts and music festivals than other music listeners, and spend less on online streaming services.
