Nielsen Won’t Play You for a Fool This April 1

For some, April Fools’ Day is a fun-filled 24 hours of pranks and mischief. But others dread gags gone wrong or believable bad news that turns out to be a poorly planned joke. In fact, according to a recent Harris Poll, 35% of Americans will attempt to pull off at least one prank this holiday while 57% of Americans say they have a lower appreciation for pranks now that they’re adults.

So at Nielsen, we thought we’d help you fool your friends this year…with the truth! As we do our research throughout each year, we often come across some interesting facts that sound false but actually aren’t. Here are some of these findings on a variety of topics, for your infotainment:

  • Flavors are increasingly popular in alcoholic beverages. There are more than 65 pumpkin-flavored beers on the market today, and salmon, pickle and popcorn are all actual vodka flavors.
  • As of fourth-quarter 2014, nearly a quarter of homes in the U.S. do not have access to a broadband service.
  • More than 85% of new fast-moving consumer good products fail in the marketplace.
  • Consumers spend more when they buy wine at the supermarket. The average grocery shopper spends an extra $28 per trip when they buy wine, which accounts for only about $15 of that extra expense.
  • One-fifth of viewers 18-24 in the U.S. visited other people’s homes to watch the big game over the last five Super Bowls (not including the 2015 event).
  • Cosmetics sales were down 1.2% in 2014 from 2013 among Non-Hispanics, but were actually up 7.4% among Hispanics in that same time frame.
  • 76% of us did not follow a diet or weight loss program in 2014. (Doesn’t mean we didn’t try, however.)
  • Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, holiday-themed programs, movies, specials and episodes of regularly scheduled shows accounted for more than 875 hours of programming over both English- and Spanish-language broadcast and cable networks—that’s more than 5 weeks of programming!
  • 34% of Americans said they plan to use smartphone apps to help support weight loss objectives this year.
  • In fourth-quarter 2014, U.S. consumers averaged nearly a week per month connecting with traditional or timeshifting TV content!
  • During the week of Thanksgiving, Americans spend $85.7 million on potatoes and $41 million on onions to help add flavor to the main course.
  • Over 40% of homes in the U.S. have access to a subscription-based video on-demand service.
  • According to our most recent Connected Devices Report, 80% of respondents to the survey indicated that they had ever used their tablet while simultaneously watching TV. And 83% of smartphone owners indicated the same.
