Nielsen to Appoint Jonathan Stolper SVP and Managing Director of Nielsen Book

Jonathan Nowell to step down in July after 15 years as Nielsen Book President

New York, NY – April 30, 2015 – Nielsen today announced that Jonathan Stolper will be appointed SVP and Managing Director of Nielsen Book as of July 1, 2015. Jonathan Nowell, after 15 years as President of Nielsen Book, will be stepping down and handing over global leadership to Stolper, who is currently SVP of Nielsen’s U.S. Book business. Stolper will continue to be based in New York and will report to Howard Appelbaum, President of Nielsen Entertainment.

Jonathan Stolper joined Nielsen Book in 2010 after leadership roles with Hachette Book Group and Harry N. Abrams in the U.S. Since 2010, his efforts have resulted in strong organic revenue growth for Nielsen’s U.S. Book business, product innovations and the integration of the Bowker Research and Commerce Solutions businesses.

Jonathan Nowell joined Nielsen Book (J. Whitaker & Sons) in 1995 after a career in professional book publishing with Reed International and consumer magazine publishing with EMAP. Nowell has significantly shaped Nielsen Book, first as Group Managing Director of Whitaker and then as President of Nielsen Book. He oversaw the development of Nielsen BookScan into the global leader in book sales measurement and made two key acquisitions: Book Data Ltd. in 2002 and Bowker’s Research and Commerce Solutions businesses in 2013. He led the successful integration of both into the Nielsen Book portfolio.

“I am delighted that Jonathan Stolper will be promoted to lead Nielsen Book globally. With the help of our strong team, I am sure Jonathan will build on this period of sustained growth,” said Jonathan Nowell. “It’s been a rewarding 20 years at Nielsen, and while I feel it’s time to pursue other opportunities, I look forward to helping with the transition through the end of this year.”

“I am thrilled to take on this role. We have a strong team at Nielsen Book and I look forward to meeting our clients and collaborators around the world over the next few weeks and months,” said Jonathan Stolper. “I am also extremely grateful to Jonathan (Nowell) for agreeing to stay on and to support me through the transition.”

Howard Appelbaum, President of Nielsen Entertainment, added, “This is bitter sweet for me. During his 20-year tenure, Jonathan Nowell has built a book business that is critical to the ongoing success of the wider book industry and at Nielsen we are extremely grateful for that. I look forward to the continued growth of the global book business under Jonathan Stolper’s leadership and building on our current success.”
