Anthony started his career in international sales at Oxford University Press in 1977 armed with an English and Related Literature degree from York and then moved on to William Collins/HarperCollins in 1980, where he held a series of domestic and international sales and marketing roles. He moved to Pearson in 1990, first as MD of Pitman Publishing, then as MD of Ladybird Books before becoming MD of Penguin UK in 1996 and CEO in 2000. Anthony served as President of the UK Publishers Association in 2002-3. Anthony left Penguin in 2005, provided consultancy services for Hachette Group UK, Bloomsbury, Simon & Schuster US. In 2008 Anthony took on his current role as MD of Pan Macmillan, winner of the Publisher of the Year award in 2015.
